Yew Forest
✨ Short description
The yew forest of Chiojdu is a protected natural area, located in Buzău county, on an area of about 197 hectares, at altitudes between 800 and 1000 m. Although yew (Taxus baccata) is a rare and precious tree, known for its medicinal properties and historical uses, the forest is affected by deforestation and lack of proper management, which has led to the disappearance of this species from the area.

📜 History of the location
The Nature Reserve “Yew Forest” was declared a protected area by Law No. 5 of March 6, 2000, with the initial aim of conserving the tree species Taxus baccata. In the past, yew was used by the Geto-Dacians and other peoples for making tools, weapons, furniture and buildings.
⭐ Importance and uniqueness of the location
Yew is a rare, nationally protected species due to its decline caused by deforestation. It is known for its medicinal properties: the leaves contain taxine, a substance used in the manufacture of the drug Taxol, which is effective in the treatment of several types of cancer. Its wood is highly prized and is used for artistic objects and sculptures.
