Written stones
The Buzaului Mountains attract us by their beauty, but especially by the mystery that hovers over them. Some of you may have heard about the rock vestiges in Buzoi, maybe you have read something about the legends of this special land. Surely you would like to know more about the Buzaului Mountains, but it’s not the same as when you walk there and see everything with your own eyes.
Somewhere between the town of Patarlagele and the village of Colti, you will come across the Burdusoaia Hill – the landscape will amaze you because you have the impression that you are between two different worlds: one with obedient peaks, all bearing the name Turtudui, the other with puddles and smooth terrain.
On the Frog Ridge – a written stone was discovered in 1997 by a teacher who was hunting wild boar. This stone is deeply embedded in the ground and is inscribed with many marks. Stars, lines, signs whose meaning you can’t really find. You think of a lot of legends, you imagine things, but you can’t solve the mystery. Before you find this stone, you’ll come across others with lines, but this big stone will catch your attention. Some say it’s shaped like a heart, but it’s actually half buried. No one has been able to figure out how deep it’s embedded in the earth.
The Road of the Crosses – between Colti and Ruginoasa you come across an initiatory image, something strange that arouses your interest.
Ruginoasa policemen – an attraction for history lovers. Two stone terraces are waiting for you to discover them somewhere perched among the rocks. You have to be spry and eager to get there because it is not within everyone’s reach. The policemen once used it as a shelter; the floor is made of sandstone and is decorated with strange figures. Everywhere there are lines, stellar symbols, the sun, human figures built very differently from what we imagine, as if body parts have been replaced with geometric figures.
The Sumerian tablet at Policiori – this is situated somewhere in a corner of Policiori and has inscriptions that we also find on the stones on the summit of Broscar. The wheat spike that seems to be on the other stone, the signs grouped as if in dials, a zig zag that seems to delimit the design and many other Sumerian elements.
The Roman Athos – Alunis- Nucu- Bozioru area is very rich in cave settlements. If you come to the area you must visit the Alunis hermitage, the much mentioned cave of Dionysius the Torchbearer, Joseph’s Cave, don’t miss the Bottom of the Cave and the two Agatha: Old Agathon and New Agathon. There are also a few other hermitages worth mentioning and visiting, such as the Fundatura Hermitage, Piatra Ingaurita and Bucataria.
Some of these settlements have disappeared with the passage of time because they are not protected. There were also monasteries that are no longer there: Gavanele and Calugarite, and the Church of St. Dumitru near Ulmet simply disappeared as if the earth had swallowed it. This happened in an earthquake, and the locals today have the impression that some days you can hear the sound of the bell from the depths.
The Buzaului Mountains are worth exploring, whether it’s summer or winter. Each season has its own charm.

In the Buzau Mountains, in the Bălănesei Valley, there are many legendary places where stones have a special place for the locals. This is how the legends of the talking stones were born, with the gates to other worlds, with the stones from which living or dead water springs. Villages are also linked to stone. Some meander down the valley, but many are set beneath the rock or near the rock, hidden and unveiled in the mystery of their birth. The path we will present to you is in fact a collection of paths. With many variations, choices and options, depending on what suits you, the weather or the explorer’s spur of the moment.
The Polices inscriptions.
As well as those who lived in stone-carved dwellings, there are places that bear other signs of man. These are the inscribed stones, inlaid testimonies to times when places seem to have lost all memory of them. Experts believe that the oldest inlays identified are of oriental inspiration, dating back to antiquity.
The “pots” of Ruginoasa.
A place that deserves the attention of cameras and the exploration of nature lovers. Basically, these are walls of more resistant rock, bent and raised vertically by the tectonic forces that created the Carpathian Mountains, crossed by the waters of a river.
The boulders of Bratilești.
But it is not about these boulders that I want to tell you about, but about the boulders scattered on the plains above the valley, near the village of Bratilești. They are all prehistoric sand blocks, probably from an ancient desert, gathered in a sea that has disappeared today. They lie scattered on the hills below Mount Ivănețu and are loved by a special group of enthusiasts of unusual activities. They are bouldering enthusiasts.

Between Patarlagele and Colti there is a deserted land, called Burdusoaia hill. Around here, all the sharp peaks are called Turtudui.
On the ridge of Broscar a stone full of marks has recently been discovered, representing a historical relic that certainly hides a mystery. To reach it, one climbs a shortcut through the woods – a steep, hard road above the village of Lupoaia. The stone is large, with dozens of signs that could not be deciphered even by the representatives of the museums in Buzau and Iasi. It was discovered in 1997, in a cold November during a wild boar hunt, on the Broscarului hill.
The stone has two long, parallel lines that could not have been made by nature. Another adjacent stone, covered in many places with soil and moss, has stars carved into it.
The rock is not a sharp ridge, as are all the peaks that surround it, but a plateau, as if smoothed by man’s hand. There’s the rock. A massive piece of rock. The marks on it are chaotic. No order: neither vertical, nor horizontal, nor serpentine, nor circular, just marks thrown everywhere.
The Written Stones of the Buzaului Mountains is one of the most important sights in the Buzaului Valley, a sight you shouldn’t miss if you are in the vicinity.
