The Spring and the Table of Joy

Spring of Joy

It is one of the ten mineral water springs discovered at Meledic in Buzau county. The place where it springs is called Dealul Lui Bucur.
It is said that a baci had several sheep guarded by a young man named Bucur. The only friend who accompanied him and collected his lost sheep was a sheepdog. One evening he sat quietly by the spring flowing from the Rosie ravine, drank a little water, and then took out the whistle on his arm and began to sing. Suddenly two girls with golden helmets on their heads appeared to take the water. They told her they were the fairies of the spring and promised to grant her a wish. Bucur only wanted power. After the fairies had dispersed like water vapour, the young man headed for the stable, where he was awaited with torches for his delay.
With great strength and dexterity he managed to defend himself, and from that moment on his luck ran through the numerous flocks of sheep and the crowded fields, building houses. The place of settlement bears the name of Bucharest, but the historical source is in the commune of Manzalesti in Buzau county.
“Bucur” in the old language means shepherd, traveler with a herd to the wintering place, passer-by. The meeting place of shepherds was represented by “Bucura”, and the most suitable place for such meetings of flocks was considered the Muntenia countryside. This Myoritic space was rich in pastures, waters, forests and a mild climate.
Bucur’s presence in the legend cannot be considered accidental, it is fully justified. Buzau County is famous for its history and legend, each river name has its own explanation, known by the locals, being transmitted from the sea to the small by word of mouth.

Bucur’s Table

According to the legend, Bucur was a shepherd who had many sheep and who, one day, came into conflict with another rich shepherd, named Giurgiu, who owned the mountains around Nereju today, because he had stolen his daughter, named Musa; out of anger, Giurgiu threw a hoe after Bucur, and the place where the hoe was stuck, a hill, is still called Sapa Musii; Bucur, afraid of Giurgiu, because he always had an enemy around him, decided to move his flocks of sheep elsewhere and left the Vrancei Mountains, on the Dambovitei Valley, where he laid the foundation stone of the city of Bucharest;
It is said that in the area there is a treasure of the outlaws buried here, which they buried before being caught by the posse.
