The Amber Legend
What do people say about amber?
Its colour, lustre, transparency and rarity have placed amber among the magic stones since ancient times, making it an amulet. The healing belief of amber began to exist at the same time as magic, being used to “cure everything”. The elders say that a golden amber worn around the neck protects against fever and other ailments, ground and mixed with honey protects against weakening of vision, and in powder form relieves stomach pains. It was prepared by keeping it for 14 days in water, beer or wine for an hour, after which a little could be drunk after each meal. Liquid amber stops vomiting, pus discharge, soothes bleeding, is effective for tonsil and cataract diseases and urinary problems. An amber placed in a tomb, makes the stone help the soul in finding its way to the afterlife more easily. If you wear such a necklace around your neck, the amber light darkens when the wearer is lying. An amber necklace given to another person makes the bond between them forever and even if death separates them, their souls cannot be separated. Wearers of this stone are protected from heart attacks, pregnant women are also protected from miscarriage and it helps them to give birth more easily. It is good to be worn by the child in the first years of life, it will bring him good luck and a beautiful growth.
Did you know that in homeopathic pharmacies in Poland you can find an ointment based on amber and tincture of amber used against rheumatic pains, neuralgia and joint diseases?
What is happening today?
The inhabitants of the Colti and Sibiciu area still look for pieces of amber today, on the waterways, after every rain, especially in springtime when the banks fall and the vegetation is barely visible. Tradition says that no one will reveal the place where they last found a lump of amber lest the curse be placed on them, preventing them from finding it again. Almost every household owns such semi-precious stones, and they are used as a source of income in extreme conditions.

A Greek legend says that the Sun had a son (Phaeton) born of love with a mortal woman. Unsure of his divine origin, he asked his father to prove his love by fulfilling his wish to drive the chariot in which the Sun rode through the sky. He refused the request for a long time, but was finally persuaded and so Phaeton set off. Intoxicated with the power to light up the world, he dropped the reins of his horse, rolling into the chariot and Phaeton was engulfed in flames. The Sun, aware that his son could no longer be saved, pushed the chariot out of the sky into the river Eridon. Thus his body solidified and spread across the water. Pieces of amber would have formed from it. Legend has it that the story of the Son of the Sun repeats itself every year on the day of the Summer Solstice when large pieces of amber appear.
