📜 History of the location

The Penteleu Massif, known as the “King of the Buzău Mountains,” was declared a forest and landscape reserve in 1975 and is recognized as a Natura 2000 site due to its remarkable biodiversity. The annual fairs on its hilltops, known as “Drăgaica,” were relocated to the plain of Buzău in the 19th century, but the traditions and stories of the place, including those linked to the outlaws Gheorghilaș and Năchită, continue to be an important part of the region’s identity.

⭐ Importance and uniqueness of the location

The Penteleu Massif stands out for its biodiversity, being an important habitat for protected fauna and flora species, including brown bear, wolf, lynx and various rare species of orchids. In addition, its spectacular landscapes and glacial lakes, such as Black Lake and Red Lake, make it a must-see destination for tourists. The Milea-Viforâta Reserve, located on the southern slopes of the massif, protects virgin spruce, fir and beech forests as well as a rare orchid species.

🐉 Local myths and stories

The Penteleu massif is associated with legends about outlaws such as Gheorghilaș, who fought alongside Tudor Vladimirescu, and the outlaw Năchită. It is said that the eagle Ilie, a symbol of Buzau, was shot here during the Second World War. This eagle is today a symbol of the county.
