Mushrooms of Odaile

✨ Short description

The Trovants of Odăile (also known as “The Mushrooms of Odăile”) are unique geological formations made up of conglomerates of sandstone that have an unusual, mushroom-like appearance. Officially discovered in 2022, these trovants have quickly become a notable attraction in the sub-Carpathian area of Buzău County, now integrated into the geotouristic circuit of the “Ținutul Buzăului” Geopark.

📜 History of the location

  • Geological Formation: The trovants formed approximately 14 million years ago through the cementation of prehistoric sands by mineral-rich waters. Subsequent erosion removed the softer external layers, revealing bizarre shapes that can be spherical, ellipsoidal, or irregular.
  • Discovery: Officially discovered in 2022 by specialists from the “Ținutul Buzăului” Geopark, these formations quickly attracted both researchers and tourists due to their unusual appearance and scientific significance.
  • Local Usage: Over time, local inhabitants have incorporated these formations into their traditions, sometimes using them in rudimentary construction or as decorative elements in public spaces, and attributing ritual significance to them.

⭐ Importance and uniqueness of the location

  • Geological Value: The trovants are living evidence of the sedimentation and erosion processes that have shaped the region. Their very slow growth—about 4–5 cm every 1,200 years—highlights the importance of preserving these natural monuments.
  • Protected Status: Integrated into the UNESCO Global Geoparks network, these trovants are strictly protected, contributing to the geotouristic diversity of the area.
  • Natural Context: Located in a picturesque setting on the edge of a coniferous forest with sweeping views over the sub-Carpathian hills, the trovants add a mysterious and beautiful element to the landscape, making them a true natural treasure.

🐉 Local myths and stories

  • Legends of the “Living Stones”: According to local lore, the trovants are considered “living stones” because, after heavy rains, locals observe subtle changes in their size and shape, attributing to them a life of their own.
  • Spirits and Portals: It is said that these formations may harbor playful spirits or even serve as portals to the other world, bringing luck to those who stop to admire them.
  • The Legend of Baba Dochia: Local folklore also links these trovants with the myth of Baba Dochia, where the legend recounts how she and her flock were turned to stone—a story that deepens the mysterious aura of these geological wonders.

🗺️ What to visit

  • The Trovants Trail: Follow the circular trail of approximately 3 km to explore a natural gallery of “stone mushrooms” in various sizes and shapes.
  • Viewpoints: Two designated platforms provide spectacular panoramic views of the trovants and the surrounding area, perfect for photography and relaxation.
  • The “Capul Satului” Wooden Church: Located along the trail, this 19th-century church underlines the local community’s historical connection with the trovants, which have even been incorporated into traditional construction elements.
  • Local Cultural Exhibits: In nearby villages, small local exhibits display how the trovants have been integrated into traditions and rituals (e.g., stone tables used during festive gatherings).

📍 How to get there

  • From Buzău: Depart from the city of Buzău via county road DJ203K, continuing on DJ204C toward the commune of Odăile. This route is paved and well-maintained, facilitating car travel.
  • From Râmnicu Sărat/Vrancea: There is also a northern alternative on unpaved roads, recommended only for robust vehicles and favorable weather conditions.
  • Final Stretch: Once in the commune of Odăile, follow the tourist signposts for “Trovanți de Odăile.” The final access involves a short 10–15 minute walk on marked paths, with designated viewpoints along the way.

🔎Things to keep in mind

  • Equipment: Wear sturdy hiking shoes since some parts of the trail may be slippery (especially after rain).
  • Weather: Check the weather forecast before departing; avoid visiting on days with torrential rain or heavy snow unless you are properly equipped.
  • Provisions: Bring water and snacks, as local facilities are limited.
  • Respect Nature: Do not leave any trash behind or damage the formations, as these trovants are fragile natural monuments.
  • Safety: Be cautious of wildlife encounters (wild boars, deer, and occasionally wolves or even bears) and make some noise while hiking to avoid startling animals.

⏳ Visiting hours and Fees

  • Hours: The trovants are accessible year-round and it is recommended to visit between 08:00 and 18:00, when natural light is optimal and the trail is clearly visible.
  • Fees: General access to the site is free of charge. Special events or guided tours organized by the Geopark may incur additional costs, but there is no mandatory fee for visiting the trovants.
