Mariana Liliana Trifu – Keeper of Popular Traditions from Bisoca

Mariana Liliana Trifu is a folk craftswoman from Pleși village, Bisoca commune, known for her dedication to the preservation and promotion of traditional Romanian costumes. Her passion for folk art began in childhood, learning to sew from her mother and grandmother. After a career in teaching, he devoted himself completely to hand sewing the ijis and other pieces of traditional costume.

Over the years, she has contributed to the revitalization of traditions by making folk costumes for folk ensembles from Buzau, such as the “Drăgăicuțele” Ensemble from Berca and the Technical College of Buzau. Among the most valuable pieces in her collection is a folk costume over 140 years old, hand-stitched with “mocănesc stitch”, which she keeps as a family heirloom.

In addition to sewing jars, Mariana Trifu has expanded her work to include fotei weaving and making leather slippers, traditional crafts that are almost forgotten. Together with her husband, Trif Stănel Trif, who makes the traditional hat, she carries on the cultural heritage of the Romanian people. Together, with respect and passion for tradition, they are reviving authentic costumes and popular values.

She has set up a small personal museum where she has collected old heritage objects and refurbished traditional pieces, thus keeping the Romanian spirit alive through every stitch and every creation.
