The Marghiloman Mansion (or palace), also known as Villa Albatros, is a monumental ensemble located in Buzău, built between 1883 and 1887 by Iancu Marghiloman. Later modernized by his son, Alexandru Marghiloman, with the help of French architect Paul Gottreau, the estate spans 22.5 hectares and includes a pond, stables, and various annexes. Once famous for its racehorses, the mansion fell into disrepair after Alexandru Marghiloman’s death in 1925. Today, it has been restored and houses the Alexandru Marghiloman Cultural Center.

Built between 1883 and 1887 by Iancu Marghiloman, a large landowner and politician, the mansion was later modernized by his son, Alexandru Marghiloman, under the guidance of French architect Paul Gottreau. Villa Albatros, known for its architectural elegance, was inaugurated in 1897, accompanied by a massive park and stables. After Marghiloman’s death, the complex was abandoned and suffered degradation, with restoration efforts beginning in the 2000s.
The Guest House hosted members of Romania’s royal family, while Alexandru Marghiloman’s stables housed English thoroughbred horses that won national and international competitions. Today, Villa Albatros is home to the Cultural and Educational Center “Alexandru Marghiloman”, with plans to transform the guest house into a hotel and the stables already housing horses.
