Istrita Hill, located in the Curved Subcarpathians, is a fascinating destination due to its history, geology and unique landscape. Known as the place of the discovery of the treasure “Cloșca cu Puii de Aur” and for the Church of a Stone, Istrița Hill is also an important wine-growing center through the Dealu Mare Vineyard. 📜 History of the location

Istrița Hill is linked to the discovery of the treasure “Hen with the Golden Chickens” at Pietroasele, attributed to the Goths in the 4th century. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as attested by Neolithic settlements, Thracian necropolis and the Dacian fortress of Gruiu Dării. During the Roman period, the hill was home to a Roman fortress and Roman baths, and in the Middle Ages Pietroasele became an important wine-growing area.

Istrița Hill is an anticline formation composed of Sarmatian sandstones and limestones. Its unique geology is home to marine fossils and varied landforms such as dolines and lapies. It is also recognized for the vines cultivated on the southern slopes, being part of the famous Dealu Mare Vineyard. The area is marked by cultural traditions, crafts and local celebrations.

🐉 Local myths and stories

The legend of Istria tells the story of a princess waiting for her husband Prince Charming to return from the battlefield. The hill is said to be where the young empress built her crystal palace and her tears form the rushing waters of the hill. Legend emphasizes the spiritual connection between nature and history in this region.

📍 How to get there

Access is via the E577 (DN1B), between Buzău and Ploiești, continuing on local roads linking the localities of Pietroasele, Breaza and Năeni. The area is accessible by car, bus or bicycle, and there are marked trails for cycling and hiking. From Pietroasa Mica, the forest road 147 leads to the top of the hill where there is a communication relay.
