House with Blazons

Short Description

Casa cu Blazoane (Blazon House) from Chiojdu, built in 1760 by the Izbășoi family, is a masterpiece of national architecture and a symbol of European culture. The building is decorated with three coats of arms, one of which represents the double-headed eagle, the symbol of the Cantacuzins. After multiple sales and a recent restoration, Casa cu Blazoane is now owned by the Romanian Union of Architects, which has started consolidation and restoration works with European funds. The historical monument was reopened to the public in 2015 and became a museum of traditional art from the Buzău Mountains.

📜 History of the Location

The Blazon House was built in 1760 by the Izbașoi landowners and was enlarged in the early 19th century. It was renovated several times and is known for the blazons decorating the main entrance. Until 2008, the house had several owners, and in 2013 it was taken over by the Union of Romanian Architects (UAR). The UAR launched a restoration project with European funds, and in 2015 the house was opened for visits.

The Importance and Uniqueness of the Location

The Blazon House is an outstanding example of traditional architecture from Muntenia, with Byzantine influences, visible in the symbolism of the blazons. It is a cultural symbol of the Buzău region and of the whole country, being a landmark of 18th-century moșnești architecture. The monument has been included in the tourist circuit and is planned to become a museum of traditional art.

🐉 Local Myths and Stories

The house has been associated with many local legends, including that it was the residence of the head of the military garrison in the 19th century, but these stories have not been confirmed by historical sources.

Access: The access to Chiojdu commune is via the county road DJ 102L, which comes from Bâscenii de Sus and continues towards Starchiojd. From this road, you can access the county road DJ 103P, which crosses the village of Chiojdu.

Visiting Hours and Fees

Program: Monday – Saturday: 10:00 – 17:00, Sunday: 10:00 – 16:00.
Fees: Admission is free, but visits must be announced by calling 0785 645 076 or 0737 030 006.
