Eagle’s lake
✨ Short description
Eagle’s Lake located in the Siriu Mountains at an altitude of 1420 meters, is a periglacial lake that impresses with its wild landscapes and fascinating legends. Also known as the ‘Bottomless Lake’, it is a place of special natural and cultural significance. Legend has it that vultures used to come here in spring to teach their chicks to fly, and the name ‘Bottomless Lake’ comes from a local story about a shepherd who found his club thrown into the lake and floating down the Danube. The area is populated by rare species such as the legally protected black goat, and the hiking trails offer access to spectacular alpine scenery.

📜 History of the location
Lacul Vulturilor, of periglacial origin, is situated on the eastern slopes of Culmii Mălâia, in the Siriu Mountains, Buzău County. It has a surface area of about 10,000 square meters and a maximum depth of 3 meters, and is fed by underground springs and rainwater. The lake is surrounded by a wild and little explored area, which gives it a unique atmosphere. Its name derives from two local legends, which add to its charm and attraction for tourists.
⭐ Importance and uniqueness of the location
Eagle’s Lake is the only periglacial lake in the Siri Mountains and one of the few such lakes in the Curved Carpathians. The surrounding landscape, including spectacular peaks such as Mălâia (1662 m) and Bocârnea (1657 m), is a magnet for hikers and nature lovers. Specific wildlife, including black goats and other protected species, make this a particularly ecologically valuable destination.
🐉 Local myths and stories
The legends associated with Eagle’s Lake add to its appeal. Alexandru Vlahuță popularized the idea that vultures come in spring to rejuvenate and teach their young to fly. On the other hand, the legend of the name ‘Bottomless Lake’ tells of a shepherd who threw his stick into the lake and found it floating on the Danube, suggesting a geographical mystery that is impossible to explain.
