Amelia Papazissu – Living Human Treasure UNESCO

Amelia Papazissu, a distinguished artisan from Beceni, Buzău County, is celebrated for her mastery in traditional weaving techniques, particularly the intricate craft of weaving with goat hair and wool. Her dedication to preserving and transmitting this unique aspect of Romanian cultural heritage earned her the prestigious title of “Living Human Treasure” in 2013, awarded by the Romanian Ministry of Culture as part of a UNESCO initiative.

Born in the village of Vintilă Vodă, Amelia’s journey into the world of weaving began at the age of 21. She initially learned horizontal loom weaving from a neighbor in Beceni and later mastered vertical loom techniques under the guidance of Sister Benedicta at the Rătești Monastery. Her passion led her to specialize in the rare and labor-intensive art of weaving with goat hair, a craft requiring meticulous preparation and skill.

For over three decades, Amelia has been a dedicated educator, teaching traditional weaving to children and young adults at the Children’s Club in Beceni. Her commitment to cultural preservation extends beyond her local community; she has conducted workshops and participated in national and international folk art festivals, sharing her expertise with a broader audience.

In addition to her weaving, Amelia is an avid collector of traditional Romanian art and textiles. Her extensive collection includes heritage pieces that reflect the rich cultural tapestry of the Buzău region. She aspires to have her collection exhibited in a museum, allowing a wider audience to appreciate and draw inspiration from Romania’s traditional artistry.

Amelia’s contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the “Meritul Cultural” medal awarded by the President of Romania in 2015. Her life’s work stands as a testament to the importance of preserving and nurturing intangible cultural heritage, ensuring that traditional crafts continue to inspire and enrich future generations.
